EMDR Therapy Basic Training

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an empirically validated psychotherapy to treat PTSD and trauma-related disorders. It has been applied to a wide range of presenting problems and self-esteem issues. The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the Department of Veterans Affairs and DOD, The American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association have listed EMDR as efficacious in the treatment of PTSD. Here are some highlights of this 62 hour course:

  • Individualized attention in a small training group: One instructor per 10 students.
  • 62 training hours over time to support mastery
  • Ample time for supervised practice with direct observation and feedback
  • Approved by the EMDR International Association, the accrediting and membership agency for EMDR
  • Case consultation to integrate your EMDR skills into your clinical practice
  • Can be applied as 12 Skill Intervention or Elective Hours to the UB Social of Social Work Office of Continuing Education Trauma-Informed Certificate Programs for an additional fee.

Completion of this course will prepare you to safely and effectively apply EMDR in a variety of clinical applications.

Course Description

Course Objective: To prepare mental health clinicians to successfully implement EMDR psychotherapy with their clients.

Course Method: This 62 hour course has 3 components:

1) Instructional: 27 hours of lecture, discussion, live demonstrations, video tapes, and Q&A. Points covered will include:

  • EMDR’s history, model, methodology and mechanisms of action
  • EMDR Case Conceptualization and treatment planning
  • EMDR 8 Phase Standard Protocol
  • EMDR’s Protocols for specific clinical populations
  • Using EMDR with complex trauma and dissociation

2) Supervised Practice: 25 hours of experiential exercises and supervised practice to learn and fine-tune newly developed EMDR skills.

3) Consultation: 10 case consultation hours of EMDR treatment in your practice.

Upon completion of this course you will:

1) Be able to incorporate the practice of EMDR in your work with a range of clients.

2) Be eligible to:

  • Apply for membership to EMDRIA
  • Be listed in the EMDRIA directory and on the EMDRIA website for referrals
  • Apply for EMDRIA Certification in EMDR after completing all necessary requirements (see www.emdria.org)
  • Attend advanced trainings in EMDR

Eligibility & Expectations For Participation

  1. Master’s degree or higher in a field of mental health counseling.
  2. License or certificate as a mental health professional. Residents/interns/ graduate students about to complete a course of study that will lead to full credentials as licensed mental health professionals may participate.*
  3. Attendance at all sessions and participation in all experiential learning.
  4. Read Francine Shapiro’s textbook: Shapiro, F. (2001). Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures. (2nd ed.). New York: The Guilford Press.
  5. Read any other assigned materials.
  6. Successful completion of proficiency requirements.
  7. Apply the EMDR methodology with clients in your clinical setting throughout the course.
  8. Present at least 2 cases in the Consultation sessions which include EMDR sessions focusing on trauma reprocessing.
  9. Trainees are required to complete the entire program to receive a certificate of completion. Approval of partial program will not be granted.

CEUs

NYSED LMSW & LCSW Contact Hours: Offered in collaboration with the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Education; recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0001. Full attendance is required; no partial credit will be awarded for partial attendance. 58 live contact hours are approved.

NYS OASAS Provider #0045: hours for addictions professionals are pending approval.

Cost

The cost of this individualized comprehensive 62 hour training program is $1850. This costs includes the required 10 hours of case consultation. If you are a UB Trauma Counseling Certificate program student, add $100.

A deposit of $850 is required to reserve your space. A discount of $100 off the entire cost of the training is offered if the full cost is paid by the registration deadline listed below. The entire fee must be paid by the start of the first training weekend.

Registration Deadline: 45 days prior to the start of the training (August 15, 2016). A late registration fee of $100 will be added after these dates.

Refund Policy: A full refund will be given up to 30 days prior to the start of the training. After that, a full refund minus a $75 processing fee will be given if the space can be filled by someone on the waiting list. Requests for refunds must be in writing. Funds may be transferred to another training if available.
