Workshop:

Expanding our Understanding of Dissociation

by

Kathleen Martin, LCSW

Reykjavik, Iceland

September 1, 2025
8:30-1600

Description

Dissociation is highly mis-understood. It is commonly perceived as pathological, referring only to those who have significant trauma histories. This is far from the truth. Many people with a dissociative process function well in the world but dont reach the satisfying mental health that is possible. This workshop will look at the myths and misperceptions of dissociation and teach the complexities of this phenomenon and the varied ways it presents in people. Structural Dissociation Theory will be taught to help you gain a deep understanding of this prevalent mental health condition.

Objectives

Participants will understand:

1)     The 3 levels of dissociation

2)     Why a high percentage of people with dissociation dont meet criteria for a diagnosable DSM-VTR or ICD-112024 dissociative disorder

3)     The full array of developmental trauma and its impact on the development of a dissociative process

4)     The many ways people with a dissociative process present in our treatment rooms

5)     Why clients with dissociative disorders frequently are mis-diagnosed

6)     Options for screening and diagnostic tools for dissociation

7)     The fundamentals of Structural Dissociation Theory
